Rugby league is emerging as a transformative force in Fiji, offering opportunities for young players from diverse backgrounds to reshape their lives. The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is at the forefront of this movement, emphasizing the sport’s potential to provide a pathway to success, particularly for individuals who may have felt marginalized in their communities.
FNRL Chairman Akuila Masi recently highlighted how rugby league has positively impacted players who once struggled with social issues. He noted that the sport serves as a vital platform for personal growth and discipline, the cornerstones of a rugby league athlete’s journey. “Our main goal is to build people, to develop especially the rejected ones,” Masi remarked, reinforcing that rugby league offers a second chance for many.
This initiative aligns with the ongoing efforts in grassroots development, which includes a significant focus on young athletes facing personal challenges. For example, the under-18 rugby league squad, coached by Wise Kativerata, is composed of young men who have triumphed over adversities, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Many players come from difficult family situations, and rugby league plays a critical role in guiding them towards a brighter future.
Kativerata echoed Masi’s sentiments, stating that the sport provides not only athletic skills but also essential life values such as respect and hard work. The coaching staff emphasizes these principles during training sessions, ensuring that players are equipped for both the sport and their lives beyond it. “The bonus is getting a contract overseas, but basic values in life is what we train them to do,” Masi added.
Moreover, rugby league in Fiji is starting to see significant growth, expanding to over 100 schools and including 34 girls’ teams. This growth is indicative of a wider recognition of rugby league’s unique appeal and its capacity to engage youth. The professional structure of the sport allows for quicker pathways to success compared to rugby union, providing a smoother transition to professional careers in countries like Australia and New Zealand.
