A total of 363 children suffering from congenital heart defects have undergone successful surgeries at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Nasese, Suva, since its opening three years ago. This milestone was celebrated during the hospital’s third anniversary, where Dr. Krupali Tappoo, the hospital’s director, emphasized that these surgeries represent not just individual medical achievements but are transformative for entire families, instilling hope and joy.
The hospital has collaborated with 20 visiting teams specializing in congenital heart diseases over its operational period. Among the procedures performed are repairs for various heart defects, including Tetralogy of Fallot, atrial and ventricular septal defects, as well as pacemaker insertions for congenital heart block. According to Dr. Tappoo, the complexity of cases has increased as the years have progressed, illustrating the growing need for their services.
A highlight from the celebrations was the mention of a one-week-old infant being among the youngest patients treated, showcasing the hospital’s commitment to addressing severe cases promptly. In total, the Sanjeevani team has conducted more than 30,051 free echocardiograms at their heart screening center, extending outreach to over 30 public health facilities across Fiji, including remote areas, ensuring that no child is overlooked.
Furthermore, Dr. Tappoo revealed that the impact of their heart screening initiatives has spread beyond Fiji to neighboring Pacific island nations, such as Christmas Island, Kiribati, and Tuvalu, which exemplifies the hospital’s mission of “one world, one family.” This collaborative effort not only highlights the importance of accessible healthcare but also fosters a regional spirit of unity and support.
As the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital continues to expand its services and reach, the outlook for pediatric cardiac care in the Pacific remains optimistic. The ongoing partnership with international medical teams and local healthcare professionals enhances the capacity to provide vital interventions, giving hope to families struggling with heart conditions.
This exemplary initiative exemplifies the profound difference compassion and collaboration can make in healthcare, ensuring a brighter future for many children and their families across the region.
