The National Housing Policy for 2025-2030 has been introduced with the goal of improving access to affordable and adequate housing, while also addressing the growing issue of informal settlements. Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa emphasized that the policy focuses on regulatory reforms, expanding social housing programs, and enhancing affordability through strategic partnerships and targeted support for low-income households.

Key elements of the policy include initiatives to lower housing costs by promoting the use of prefabricated homes and reducing taxes on building materials. Nalumisa noted that current financial institutions are offering competitive loan packages and interest rates to assist families in acquiring homes, land, and construction resources.

To ensure the success of this initiative, coordinated efforts will be necessary across various government agencies, municipalities, and civil society partners. Nalumisa highlighted that this policy aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

This new policy operates in conjunction with previously announced housing initiatives, which include developing prefabricated homes and creating public-private partnerships to meet housing demands. This emphasis on collaboration reflects a hopeful strategy for sustainable housing solutions amidst ongoing challenges like rapid urbanization and climate change.

The government’s renewed commitment to providing accessible housing solutions is an encouraging step toward making quality living conditions a right for all Fijians, potentially fostering a more inclusive society. By prioritizing these actions, the administration signifies a determination to meet the housing needs of its citizens and improve overall community well-being.
