A primary school in the interior of Ra has recently undergone significant enhancements thanks to a community project sponsored by the BSP Financial Group, in collaboration with the University of the South Pacific (USP). The Burevanua District School has now received vital improvements, including renewable energy solutions, a water filtration system, additional taps, computers, and a new toilet block. This initiative reflects an ongoing commitment by BSP to foster educational growth and development within local communities.

BSP Financial Group’s area manager for the West and North, Viliame Varasikete, officially launched the project, affirming the organization’s dedication to community development. He stated, “At BSP, we care about the communities we operate in. Helping children’s education aligns with our shared values of aspiring for excellence and growth.” The initiative is notable for not only improving the school infrastructure but also providing benefits to the surrounding community, allowing them to host events that support local development.

Significant technical support was provided by Utkal Mehta, an associate professor in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at USP, alongside dedicated USP volunteers who contributed their expertise to design and install a sustainable solar power solution. This solar system now powers the entire school, ensuring stable energy access for both learning and community functions.

Head teacher Maika Vauseu expressed profound gratitude for the project’s transformational impact, noting, “This initiative is a game-changer for our students. They do not have electricity at home, which limits learning to daylight hours.” With the introduction of solar-powered lights in classrooms, students—especially those in secondary school residing in the village—can now study and complete assignments at night. The solar system’s excess capacity is also shared with the community, allowing local residents to charge their phones and hold evening meetings at the school.

Additionally, the installation of a separate toilet block for early childhood education and the first two years of primary enhances safety and the overall experience for younger students. Vauseu remarked, “We are deeply thankful to BSP and USP for making this possible.”

This project is part of BSP’s broader commitment to improving educational facilities and sanitary conditions, similar to their previous initiatives at Koroqaqa Primary School, where new hygienic facilities, maintenance upgrades, and a commitment to community well-being were central to the undertaking.

By fostering collaborations between academic institutions and businesses, BSP’s project at Burevanua District School serves as a testament to the positive societal impacts that can arise through dedicated partnerships. The enhancements made not only benefit the students today but also pave the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for the entire community.
