In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a remarkable success story is emerging, showcasing the resilience and innovation of the local sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly changed his life and positively impacted the livelihoods of numerous cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider, addressing a crucial gap in the industry.
After completing Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later managed Food Process at Batiri Citrus Farm. He discovered a significant opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, driven by a new initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).
In 2022, with the backing of the FSC and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti made the pivotal decision to become a transport service provider. “I noticed a shortage of tractors in the sector, making it challenging for farmers to prepare their land,” he stated. He realized that many growers struggled to afford upfront payments, which led him to implement a business plan and work order system offered by the FSC, allowing him to provide services without requiring immediate cash payments. “It was a win-win for everyone,” he added.
Starting with just one tractor, Murti applied his previous experience to help local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to reliable service quickly drew attention from farmers across the region. Today, his business has flourished, featuring a fleet of six tractors and various essential equipment such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, all critical for effective sugarcane farming.
“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and my team, I was able to expand the business,” Murti remarked. “The work order system enabled me to manage it like a professional business, benefiting the farmers as well.”
In addition to his services, Murti has returned to cane farming himself, cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning to grow further in the future.
