Transforming Fiji’s Sugarcane Sector: One Man’s Journey from Harvester to Innovator

In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a remarkable story of achievement is emerging that underscores the importance of perseverance and innovation within the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly impacted the lives of numerous cane farmers by providing much-needed tractor services.

Murti started his career as a cane harvester after leaving school in Form 4, later managing the Batiri Citrus Farm. He discovered an opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector after the Fiji Sugar Corporation introduced a new initiative. In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti ventured into providing transport services for farmers.

“I noticed a shortage of tractors, which made land preparation difficult for farmers,” Murti explained. He highlighted that many growers were unable to pay upfront but, with the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s business plan and work order system, he could provide services without requiring immediate cash payments. “It was a win-win for everyone,” he added.

Beginning with just one tractor, Murti utilized his experience from his previous job to assist local farmers. His commitment to dependable service quickly gained recognition among the farming community. Now, his business has grown considerably, featuring a fleet of six tractors and vital farming implements, including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers.

“With perseverance and the support of FSC field officials, I was able to expand the business,” Murti stated. “The work order system allowed me to operate it professionally, benefiting both me and the farmers.”

In addition to his services, Murti has returned to cane farming himself, cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning for further expansion.
