Acting Police Commissioner of Fiji, Aporosa Lutunauga, has emphasized that there is no tolerance for police officers who compromise the integrity of the force from within. He declared the need for an ethics-based and community-oriented police team that prioritizes public service and values community engagement. “As police officers, this is not just a job; it’s a calling,” Lutunauga stated, highlighting the responsibility the force bears to meet national expectations.

To ensure progress, the Fiji Police Force is conducting consultations throughout the country to redefine its strategic goals for the next five years. These discussions aim to enhance service delivery and address various internal issues that have been raised, reflecting the ongoing commitment to capacity-building within the organization.

Moreover, Lutunauga pointed out that many challenges are rooted internally and require collaborative efforts to solve. “We need to look at our resources so that we deliver the service that is expected by the people,” he mentioned, underlining the need for adequate resource allocation. Community engagement sessions, known as talanoa, are being held to foster trust and hope among citizens for a safer and more effective police presence.

This renewed focus aligns with broader reform efforts identified in previous articles, such as the Police Reset Strategy, designed to professionalize law enforcement and restore public trust. Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has underscored the urgency of addressing lapses in accountability and enhancing the integrity of the police force. The recent focus on professionalism and ethical standards in police training reflects a proactive approach to rebuilding community relationships.

The commitment shown by the Fiji Police Force leadership signifies a hopeful outlook towards a future where public safety and trust are paramount. Collaborative efforts paired with continued community dialogue stand to strengthen the bond between the police force and the communities they serve, ultimately paving the way for a safer Fiji.
