Transforming Farming: The Rise of Fiji’s Tractor Trailblazer

In the Solove Sector of Fiji, Seqaqa, an inspiring success story is emerging, showcasing the determination and innovation within the local sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has made significant changes to his life and the livelihoods of many cane farmers by stepping in as a tractor service provider, fulfilling a vital need in the industry.

Following his education, Mr. Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later served as a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His breakthrough came when he identified a substantial opportunity within Fiji’s sugarcane sector, spurred by a new initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti boldly launched his transport service. “I noticed a shortage of tractors, which hindered farmers from adequately preparing their land,” he stated. He recognized that many growers were unable to pay upfront for such services, which led him to utilize FSC’s business plan and work order system to provide services without immediate cash requirements. “It was beneficial for everyone involved,” he added.

Starting with a single tractor, Mr. Murti drew on his experience at Food Process to help local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to delivering dependable services quickly gained recognition among farmers in the sector. Today, his business has grown remarkably, now featuring a fleet of six tractors and essential implements such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—crucial tools for effective sugarcane farming.

“Thanks to perseverance and the support from FSC field officials and the team, I have been able to expand the business,” he remarked. “The work order system enabled me to operate like a legitimate business, benefiting the farmers as well.”

In addition to his services, Mr. Murti has resumed his own cane farming endeavors, cultivating 7.5 acres of cane this year, with plans for further growth.
