More than 2,200 students with disabilities are currently enrolled in both special and regular schools, according to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. He made this announcement during the recent Special and Inclusive Education (SIE) Talanoa, AGM, Wellness, and Awards (TAWA) Conference.

Minister Radrodro emphasized the vital role that special and inclusive education plays in the development of children with disabilities, noting that educators are crucial in influencing their futures. He expressed pride in the progress achieved so far, while also acknowledging that there remains much work ahead to ensure that every student, regardless of their abilities, has access to a quality education.

He highlighted initiatives aimed at integrating students into regular schools, evaluating a new curriculum for Years 1-4 that addresses various learning needs, and increasing funding for special and inclusive education programs.

Furthermore, Mr. Radrodro recognized the hard work and dedication of special and inclusive educators. He praised their commitment and passion for making a substantial difference in the lives of the students they serve. “While awards symbolize appreciation, the true impact of your work transcends trophies or certificates,” he stated. He called on educators to continue their efforts with empathy and inclusivity.

The Minister also acknowledged the support of development partners, particularly the Government of Australia, alongside local organizations like the Fiji Disabled Persons Federation and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.

This event serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to inclusive education and the collaborative efforts necessary to improve the educational landscape for students with disabilities. As society moves forward, the focus on quality education for all, regardless of ability, can help pave the way for a more inclusive future.

In summary, while acknowledging progress in inclusive education for students with disabilities, Minister Radrodro underscores the need for continued initiatives and support to create an equitable learning environment.
