Fijians in need of heart bypass surgeries now have an affordable local option that can save them over $25,000. Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) has recently launched this groundbreaking service in Fiji, significantly reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for critical cardiac care.
Kusum Lata, 56, from Lautoka, made history as PSH’s first open-heart surgery patient, undergoing a successful four-hour procedure. Previously, she had been advised by Lautoka’s Aspen Hospital to go to India for her surgery, which would have cost her around FJ$54,000. In contrast, thanks to PSH, she was able to secure the same procedure for less than a quarter of that cost.
Parvish Kumar, founder and CEO of PSH, emphasized that this initiative represents a significant advancement in healthcare accessibility for Fiji and the wider Pacific region. He noted, “This achievement reflects the dedication and expertise of our surgical team,” highlighting that this new capability allows patients to receive world-class cardiac care right at home, benefitting from the support of family while enjoying lower costs.
The surgical team at PSH has been trained in leading international healthcare institutions, ensuring that they maintain high clinical excellence standards. Mr. Kumar pointed out that the successful execution of Fiji’s first open-heart surgery at PSH is the culmination of 15 months of planning, investment in advanced technology, and teamwork among medical professionals.
Describing this development as a “beacon of hope” for patients in the Pacific, Mr. Kumar expressed pride in the hospital’s role in improving cardiac healthcare accessibility. With meticulous pre- and post-operative protocols in place, PSH is striving for a perfect success rate. He praised the contributions of Fijian nurses, stating, “Our Fijian nurses performed excellently, providing comprehensive care throughout the surgery process.”
This initiative brings a reassuring sense of optimism to many potential patients, showcasing how local healthcare advancements can lead to significant savings and enhanced care, ultimately improving the quality of life for Fijians facing serious health challenges.
Overall, this development illustrates a progressive step in the healthcare landscape of Fiji and the Pacific, fostering both health and hope.
