Transformative Tourism Development Takes Off on Nasaulevu Island

A new multi-million-dollar integrated tourism development project is set to launch on Nasaulevu Island. The initiative was confirmed following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the island’s owners, the Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which outlines a master plan for the island.

Nasaulevu Island spans 747 acres and is located opposite Denarau Port Marina, close to Fantasy Island. NDT chairman Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, who is also the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Joint Task Force, stated at the MOU signing in Navoci Village, Nadi, last Friday, that this marks the beginning of a pivotal journey to eliminate poverty and empower the community for future generations.

“The signing of this MOU symbolizes a transformative journey for us, especially regarding the large tourism development planned for Nasaulevu,” he noted, adding that the project is expected to commence in May next year.

Brigadier-General Gadai indicated that the Revised Masterplan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project would take six to nine months to complete, including feasibility studies. During this time, negotiations will begin on how to establish a joint venture with FNPF and ADB. Once the joint venture options are confirmed, a further MOU will be signed to move forward with the project.

He described the initiative as a significant and unique tourism development project for both Fiji and the wider region. ADB director general Cathy Marsh revealed that the initial budget for the master plan is set at $300,000, and they expect to send specialists to begin work on development before the year concludes.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorology, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, expressed the government’s readiness to support landowners in advancing their economic participation. NDT secretary Anare Naivutevute emphasized that the master plan would be unprecedented, branding it as the hub for the South Pacific.

The ADB has shown interest in funding various developments, including:
– Resorts
– Commercial lots
– Residential lots
– A cultural center

The proposed cultural center aims to draw tourists by providing them with experiences that highlight Fijian culture, offering visitors a taste of what the country is renowned for.
