A significant integrated tourism development project worth millions of dollars is set to commence on Nasaulevu Island. This was confirmed following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the island’s owners, the Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to create a master plan for the island.
Nasaulevu Island spans 747 acres and is located across from Denarau Port Marina and close to Fantasy Island. Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, Chairman of NDT and Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Joint Task Force, stated during the MOU signing at Navoci Village in Nadi that this partnership marks a significant step towards eradicating poverty and empowering the local community for future generations.
Gadai expressed optimism about the project’s potential, stating, “This MOU symbolizes a transformative journey for us, particularly with the large tourist development in Nasaulevu.” The project is slated to begin next May, with the Revised Masterplan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project anticipated to take six to nine months to complete, including a feasibility study.
As part of the master planning phase, negotiations will start regarding the possible joint venture with FNPF and ADB. Once a joint venture plan is finalized, an additional MOU will be signed to officially initiate the project.
According to ADB Director General Cathy Marsh, the master plan is estimated to cost around $300,000, and there is hope to deploy specialists to begin developmental work by the end of this year. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Minister for Public Works, Meteorology and Transport, expressed the Government’s readiness to assist landowners in enhancing their economic participation.
NDT Secretary Anare Naivutevute mentioned that the master plan would be unique, dubbing it the hub for the South Pacific. He also noted that the ADB is interested in funding the construction of various facilities, including resorts, commercial and residential lots, and a cultural center. The goal of the cultural center is to attract tourists by offering them immersive experiences that showcase Fijian culture and heritage.
