The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is currently conducting an off-season athletics training camp designed to empower young athletes, particularly those from smaller schools, by offering structured training during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou, who initiated this program, observed that many talented students often lack the necessary off-season training, leading to poor fitness levels and subsequent injuries during competitions.
Tafo’ou expressed his concern after witnessing several athletes struggle during past events, with some fainting due to unfitness. In response to this challenge, he proposed the off-season camp, which has debuted with a nominal fee of $20 per week and has already attracted around 35 participants since its launch shortly before Christmas. The camp spans six weeks and is set to conclude on January 24, just in time for the inter-house competitions slated for February.
Participants benefit from the expertise of former athletes, including Olympic champion Albert Miler and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro, who guide attendees through specialized training in areas such as high jumps and sprints. The program emphasizes foundational athletic skills, including block starts and endurance training, while also instilling crucial life skills like discipline and time management. Parents have reported positive changes in their children’s behavior, noting improvements in punctuality and adherence to their training schedules.
Tafao’ou aims to create an inclusive atmosphere, ensuring access to quality coaching for all participants regardless of their school’s resources. Many young athletes who previously felt intimidated by more experienced competitors are now building their confidence and enthusiasm for upcoming inter-house events as a result of the supportive environment fostered by the camp.
As the camp continues, Tafao’ou encourages more young athletes to join, underscoring that there is still time to benefit from the training before the inter-house competitions begin. Reflecting on the program’s goals, he stated, “We want to see people much fitter and well-prepared for competitions, making quality training accessible to everyone.”
In summary, the FSC off-season athletics training camp represents a substantial commitment to nurturing young talent in Fiji. With a focus on inclusivity, skill development, and discipline, this initiative is poised to inspire a new generation of athletes, paving the way for greater success in local and international competitions. The passion and dedication exhibited by these young participants are signs of a promising future for athletics in the region.
