Jese Dautei Robinson has made a significant mark in the nursing field by becoming the first male nurse to graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery in Labasa, standing out among 12 fellow nurses. He has been honored with three prestigious awards for his outstanding academic performance, specifically in Normal Puerperium and Newborn, Normal Labour and Birth, and Overall Academic Excellence.
The 32-year-old nurse from Vunikodi Village, Udu, Macuata, was celebrated at the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education graduation ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Labasa. Working at Nasea Health Centre, Mr. Robinson’s dedication to nursing was sparked by personal tragedy; he decided to pursue this path following the loss of his father when he was just in Year 11.
As the second eldest in a family of eight, he took on the responsibility of supporting his family and community. His choice to specialize in midwifery is rooted in his aspiration to be a caring father. Mr. Robinson expressed, “I chose to become a midwife, even though I am a male nurse, because I want to become a good father.”
He is not alone in his dedication; his wife, who also works as a nurse at Labasa Hospital, shares his commitment to healthcare. Motivated by a desire to contribute positively to childbirth experiences, Mr. Robinson upgraded his qualifications to ensure that mothers receive optimal care during delivery. He shared, “To help bring a life into this world and place it in a mother’s arms is the purest joy.”
Additionally, Mr. Robinson advocates for the nursing profession, highlighting its gender inclusivity. He encourages others to consider a career in nursing, stating, “Nursing is a beautiful profession where there is no boundary set between genders.”
