National women’s football coach Angeline Chua has commended three players who have recently secured contracts abroad, marking an important milestone for women’s football in Fiji. Adi Litia Bakaniceva and Maria Veronica have signed with Hekari Football in Papua New Guinea, while Angeline Rekha is set to join New Zealand’s Western Springs on February 1.
Coach Chua referred to the players as “trailblazers,” emphasizing that their achievements highlight the possibilities attainable through dedication and hard work. She expressed hope that their successes will encourage more young female players to pursue similar opportunities in football.
Bakaniceva, who plays as a midfielder for Rewa and the national team, started with Hekari last week, and Veronica joined this week. Rekha, known for her versatility and strong defensive skills, is recognized as one of Fiji’s top defenders and prepares to embark on her journey soon.
Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel shared that these achievements reflect the improving standards of women’s football in Fiji, supported by the Fiji FA’s investment in grassroots programs and competitive leagues. He noted that the contracts underline the growing recognition of Fijian talent on the global stage, stating, “This is a proud moment for Fijian football. These contracts show that our players can compete at the highest levels and inspire the next generation of female footballers.”
This development not only celebrates individual success but also shows a burgeoning era for women’s sports in Fiji, paving the way for future generations of female athletes to chase their dreams internationally. The progress in women’s football in Fiji is a hopeful sign that dedication serves as the foundation for success and recognition on a global platform.
