Fiji men’s sevens rugby player Kavekini Tanivanuakula remains a contender for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament, despite facing drink driving charges. Head coach Osea Kolinisau confirmed this during a training session on Tuesday. Tanivanuakula, a former Natabua High School student, joined his teammates as they prepare for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament happening next week.

Tanivanuakula made his national debut in Dubai last month and also played in Cape Town. His arrest occurred on December 14 at a checkpoint in Nadi, and he is due to appear at the Nadi Magistrate’s Court on February 17, 2025. Kolinisau highlighted the significance of decision-making, especially for a newcomer like Tanivanuakula, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with representing Fiji. He noted that Tanivanuakula has shown positive changes in his attitude since the incident.

Kolinisau has stressed the need for players to act as role models for younger fans, focusing on kindness, respect, and accountability. The final squad for the Australian trip will be announced after the Coral Coast 7s, which takes place from January 24-26.

This situation serves as a reminder that setbacks can lead to valuable learning experiences. Tanivanuakula’s journey illustrates the potential for personal growth and development, transforming challenges into opportunities to inspire others. With support and guidance, there is hope that he will emerge from this experience as a stronger individual and role model for the next generation of athletes.
