Marie Louise Milne made history by becoming the only female Member of Parliament (MP) in Vanuatu’s 14th Legislature, which began its official session recently. Among her 51 male colleagues, Milne stands as a significant figure for gender representation in a country that traditionally sees a low percentage of women in politics.

Milne, who represents Port Vila and is a member of the Green Confederation party, highlighted the importance of her role beyond the parliamentary title. She expressed pride in taking the first oath among her peers, framing it as a momentous occasion not just for herself, but for all women in Vanuatu. “I carry a great responsibility to voice the concerns of women across Vanuatu, especially in Port Vila,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to ensuring that women’s issues are addressed in the national discourse.

Reflecting on the challenges ahead, Milne acknowledged the obstacles she may face but remains determined to work towards a brighter future, particularly for children and the elderly. In light of recent events, including an earthquake that affected the nation, she called for unity in rebuilding efforts, drawing on the sentiment expressed by Prime Minister that collaboration is essential for national development.

Milne’s election is particularly historic, as she is the first woman to secure a seat in Vanuatu’s Parliament from Port Vila in 34 years. Her commitment to advocating for women’s involvement in political processes echoes sentiments shared by political leaders in the Pacific region calling for enhanced female representation. For instance, discussions in nearby Fiji have centered around implementing quota systems to improve women’s presence in government, a reflection of the ongoing struggle for equal political representation across the region.

Despite the current aspirations for increased representation, Milne faces a political landscape where women remain significantly underrepresented. Encouragingly, her journey serves as an inspiration for future female candidates. She urged women contemplating a political career not to lose hope, highlighting that perseverance and commitment can lead to success.

As Vanuatu embarks on this new political chapter, Milne’s presence symbolizes a turning tide towards a more inclusive governance structure. Her dedication to representing the voices of women within the Parliament plays a vital role in reinforcing the notion that true representation must encompass diverse perspectives, ultimately benefiting the entire nation.
