Two tragic accidents in the Western Division claimed the lives of two individuals early yesterday morning. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents took place in Lautoka.
The first accident occurred shortly after midnight when a 38-year-old man lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara flat toward Nadi. The vehicle veered off the road, resulting in serious injuries to the driver and three passengers. All four were transported to Lautoka Hospital, but unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries, while two of the passengers remain hospitalized in stable condition, and one has been discharged.
The second incident, a suspected hit and run, took place around 3 AM on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who promptly took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
SSP Divuana confirmed that traffic investigators are actively seeking information regarding the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run case. Investigations into both accidents are ongoing.
In a related event earlier today in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old driver sustained serious injuries after crashing into the trailer of a parked truck. The Lami Police transported the victim to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Despite these unfortunate incidents, it is notable that the road death toll stands at 50 this year, a reduction compared to 71 fatalities during the same period last year. This statistic brings a glimmer of hope, indicating efforts in road safety may be having a positive impact.
Overall, as the investigation continues, there is a community call for increased road safety awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
