Two tragic accidents occurred in the Western Division yesterday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours.

The first accident happened shortly after midnight, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that he lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara flat towards Nadi, causing the car to veer off the road. The man was taken with three other passengers to Lautoka Hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Of the three passengers, two remain hospitalized in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.

The second accident, believed to be a hit and run, occurred around 3 am on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby who immediately rushed him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana indicated that traffic investigators are currently seeking information related to the vehicle involved in the second incident, as inquiries continue for both accidents.

In a separate serious incident in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old man sustained serious injuries after his vehicle collided with the trailer of a parked truck. He was transported to Colonial War Memorial Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

SSP Divuana also provided an update on the road death toll, which stands at 50 this year, a significant decrease from the 71 recorded during the same period last year.

While these incidents are deeply saddening, the decrease in the overall road death toll reflects ongoing efforts to improve road safety. Awareness campaigns and enforcement of traffic regulations may contribute to reducing the number of fatalities in the future.

It is essential for drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the roads to prevent further tragedies and protect lives.
