Two individuals tragically lost their lives in separate incidents over the weekend in the Southern Division. A 30-year-old man was fatally injured in a suspected hit-and-run accident in Colo-I-Suva. He was discovered near Naisogo Settlement early Saturday and was later pronounced dead at CWM Hospital. Authorities have detained a man in his 30s for questioning, and his vehicle has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

In a second incident, a woman in her 50s died after her husband’s vehicle veered off Queens Road and collided with a lamp post. The husband sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized.

These unfortunate accidents contribute to a growing concern about road safety, with the current national road death toll reaching 20, up from 19 at the same time last year. The increase in fatalities underscores the urgent need for drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to road safety measures to prevent further tragedies.

Previous reports indicate that the number of road deaths can fluctuate significantly, but heightened awareness and safety campaigns aimed at improving driver behavior may be starting to yield positive results. For instance, the overall road death toll showed a decrease from 57 the previous year in similar reports, suggesting ongoing efforts in road safety are beginning to positively impact the community.

Continued commitment to safe driving practices, public awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations are essential for reducing the number of such tragedies on the roads. The hope is that these initiatives will foster a culture of safety and responsibility among all drivers.
