The number of road fatalities in the country has now reached 57 after a tragic accident claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the incident occurred in the early hours of December 3 while the young driver was on Korotari Road in Labasa. Reports suggest that he lost control of his vehicle, which subsequently veered off the road and crashed into a culvert.
Following the accident, the victim was quickly transported to Labasa Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. SSP Divuana has noted that the young driver was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license, an issue that will be closely examined during the ongoing investigation into the accident.
This incident highlights the critical importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations, particularly among young drivers. As communities mourn the loss of life, it serves as a reminder to promote safe driving habits and ensure that all drivers are properly licensed to operate vehicles.
In times of tragedy, we can hope that this unfortunate event will inspire increased dialogue about traffic safety and the importance of responsible driving, particularly for teen drivers, fostering a culture of caution and care on the roads.
