The national road death toll has tragically risen to 54 following the death of a 13-year-old student. The incident occurred when the boy, a passenger in a vehicle with four others, was involved in a collision with a truck driven by a 21-year-old man on Princess Road in Tacirua yesterday afternoon.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the truck’s driver allegedly lost control, causing the vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic and collide with the car carrying the student and his companions. Emergency services quickly transported all occupants of the vehicle to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, but unfortunately, the young victim was pronounced dead upon arrival.
This unfortunate event contributes to a national road death toll of 54 for the year, significantly lower than the 73 fatalities reported last year.
While this incident is a somber reminder of road safety, it also highlights the need for increased efforts in driver education and awareness programs to prevent future tragedies. It’s crucial for both drivers and passengers to prioritize safety on the roads.
In light of these developments, communities are encouraged to engage in discussions about road safety and support measures that can lead to safer driving practices.
