On Saturday morning, a tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of 26-year-old Aporosa Momo on Drasa Avenue in Lautoka. His father, Tomasi Waimuka, shared the distressing news of his son’s death, which was discovered by a passerby who rushed Momo to Lautoka Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

Tomasi recounted that the family had just returned from a funeral the night before, during which Momo informed him of his plans to visit a relative. Hours later, Tomasi received the heartbreaking news from his nephews about the accident. Expressing his sorrow, he wished his son could have survived with only minor injuries. When he reached the scene, he was devastated to find Momo’s body covered, and he lamented the loss of his son, who leaves behind two young children.

Momo was known in the community for his kindness and contributions, actively participating in local events and playing for a rugby league team in Lautoka. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana announced that investigations into Momo’s death are underway.

In a separate incident, another road accident occurred shortly after midnight on Friday, leading to the death of 38-year-old Nadi businessman Ronesh Chand, who lost control of his vehicle. Of the three passengers accompanying him, two remained stable at the hospital while the third was discharged. SSP Divuana highlighted that the current road death toll is at 50, showing a decrease from 71 during the same period last year.

The loss of life in these incidents serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety and community awareness. While the community mourns, it also illustrates the strength of familial bonds and the impact individuals can have within their families and to those around them, highlighting the need to cherish every moment with loved ones and act with care on the roads.
