A 16-year-old teenager from Labasa, Shalvin Lal, tragically became the latest road fatality following a car accident early Monday morning. Lal, who was reportedly driving without a license, lost control of the vehicle on Korotari Road around 1 a.m., leading the car to veer off the road and crash into a culvert. Despite being rushed to the hospital for urgent care, he succumbed to his injuries.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the unfortunate incident is part of a growing concern regarding road safety, with the current road death toll standing at 57, a decrease from 74 fatalities at the same time last year. Lal’s guardian, Premila Devi, expressed profound sorrow over his passing, describing him as a loving and helpful young man. She reflected on how he was the youngest of three siblings and shared the grief of losing him so suddenly.

Devi emphasized the shock their family felt upon learning that Lal was driving when the accident occurred, highlighting the deep emotional impact this loss has had on their lives.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving. It emphasizes the need for communities to engage in open conversations about the risks associated with driving without proper training and the consequences it can lead to. The hope is that this incident will encourage better road practices and preventive measures to enhance safety for all road users.
