The Ministry of Employment’s National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) is currently investigating the tragic death of a Japanese national who drowned while snorkeling near the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka earlier this month. The 50-year-old male experienced difficulties while swimming alone on November 4, around 8 a.m.
Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh stated that preliminary findings indicate the visitor drowned during the incident. The NOHSS is probing further to ascertain whether the hotel had appropriate safety systems and protocols for supervising guest activities, including rescue and evacuation measures in case of emergencies.
To support its investigation, the NOHSS is collaborating with the relevant authorities to acquire medical reports and post-mortem examination documents from the police. Minister Singh emphasized the necessity for hotel management to identify potential hazards and implement effective control measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The NOHSS regularly oversees compliance with workplace safety standards across Fiji, including at resorts, and issues enforcement notices to address non-compliance. A comprehensive report will be generated upon the conclusion of the investigation.
This incident underscores the importance of safety measures in tourist facilities, particularly concerning activities such as snorkeling where participants may be at risk. As investigations continue, there is hope that the findings will lead to strengthened safety protocols, ensuring the well-being of both guests and staff in the future.
