The family of Ubayd Haider, a celebrated boxer from Fiji, is seeking clarification on the events that led to his tragic passing on October 26. Haider, whose real name was Nathan Singh, died at Lautoka’s Aspen Hospital after spending 16 days in a coma, during which he underwent brain surgery. His father, Gyan Singh, a seasoned boxing trainer, expressed their devastation, stating, “We need answers on what happened.”
Haider collapsed following a ninth-round technical knockout against China’s Runqi Zhou during the IBO Asia Pacific Featherweight title bout. His teammates and promoter Freddy Chand rushed him first to Zen’s Medical and then to Nadi Hospital before he was transported to Lautoka.
The Boxing Commission of Fiji mandates that promoters provide a stretcher ringside for emergencies, raising concerns about adherence to these regulations during the fight. In a heartfelt tribute, Haider’s opponent Runqi Zhou expressed condolences on social media, acknowledging Haider’s fighting spirit.
Survived by his wife, Helen Margaret Singh, and their two children, Helen shared touching memories of their time together and gratitude for the life they built as a family. She expressed her enduring love for Haider and the legacy he leaves behind through their children.
In response to the incident, the Government and Boxing Commission of Fiji have initiated a Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Pita Driti, to investigate the circumstances surrounding Haider’s collapse. Ten individuals are expected to be questioned as part of the inquiry.
The boxing community has come together to honor Haider, with public viewing scheduled at the FMF Gym. His funeral will take place later in the day, followed by burial at the Raralevu Muslim Cemetery.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety regulations in sports and the need for prompt medical attention when athletes are at risk. While the circumstances are heartbreaking, the community’s response reflects the deep respect and admiration for Haider’s contributions to boxing and his impact on those around him. In time, it is hoped that the inquiry will provide clarity and lead to improvements that safeguard the health and safety of athletes in the future.
