A total of 603 individuals have tragically lost their lives in road accidents, as reported by Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic for the Fiji Police Force. This figure was disclosed during the conclusion of the National Road Safety Week at the FMF Hibiscus Festival.
The deaths have occurred from 2014 to the present day. SSP Divuana emphasized that these 603 victims left behind families and unfulfilled dreams, with many of the accidents being preventable. He attributed the causes of these accidents to poor decision-making and a lack of respect for others’ right to safety on the roads.
The statistics indicate that the victims comprise drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and riders, highlighting the wide range of individuals who are susceptible to road accidents. SSP Divuana stressed that this issue stems from attitudes and the necessity to shift mindsets regarding road safety.
He urged adults to model responsible behavior for their children by cultivating a safer perspective on road usage.
