Tragic Road Safety Toll: 603 Lives Lost Since 2014

A total of 603 individuals have tragically lost their lives in road accidents in Fiji, as disclosed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic for the Fiji Police Force, during the conclusion of the National Road Safety Week at the FMF Hibiscus Festival. This figure represents fatalities from 2014 to the present.

SSP Divuana emphasized the profound impact of these losses, stating, “The 603 victims left behind their families, their aspirations, their lives cut short, because of accidents which were in most cases avoidable.” He noted that the primary causes of these accidents stemmed from poor decision-making and a lack of respect for the safety of others on the road.

He highlighted the diversity of road accident victims, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and riders, indicating that various groups are vulnerable to such tragedies. SSP Divuana stressed the importance of changing attitudes and mindsets regarding road safety, urging adults to model safe behaviors for their children.
