A total of 603 individuals have lost their lives as a result of road accidents in Fiji, according to the Director of Traffic for the Fiji Police Force, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana. He shared this information during the conclusion of the National Road Safety Week at the FMF Hibiscus Festival.
The fatalities have been recorded from 2014 to the present day. SSP Divuana stated, “The 603 victims left behind their families and dreams, with their lives cut short because of accidents that were, in most cases, preventable. I call them preventable because the causes of these accidents were primarily due to poor choices and a blatant disregard for the safety of others on our roads.”
He further highlighted that the statistics reveal a wide range of victims, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and riders, indicating the various groups that are at risk of road accidents and fatalities.
SSP Divuana emphasized that this issue stems from attitudes and stressed the need to alter our perspectives on road safety. He urged adults to lead by example when it comes to promoting road safety for the benefit of their children.
