The national road death toll in Fiji has reached 55 following a tragic accident on Thursday night. An eight-year-old girl was killed when a vehicle struck her while she was crossing Edinburgh Drive in Suva with her father. The incident occurred on November 28, involving a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.
Upon being hit, both the father and daughter were rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for medical attention, but sadly, the young girl was declared dead upon arrival.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, noted that although the current death toll represents a decrease from the 74 fatalities reported during the same time last year, he emphasized the importance of road safety and urged everyone to be responsible on the roads. Investigations into the accident are ongoing, and the driver will be questioned in the upcoming days.
The police have reiterated their call for the public to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic safety measures to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In a hopeful perspective, while the loss of the young girl is heart-wrenching, the decrease in overall road fatalities compared to last year suggests that efforts toward improving road safety are making a positive impact, and community awareness is paramount in safeguarding lives.
