A devastating incident on Tuesday afternoon has resulted in the tragic death of an 8-year-old boy near the Basikalave Settlement on Dreketi Highway. According to initial reports from law enforcement, the child allegedly ran onto the roadside when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a man in his 50s.

Authorities confirmed that the driver will be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. A post-mortem examination is also forthcoming to clarify the cause of death. This heartbreaking incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding road safety, particularly for vulnerable pedestrians, including children.

In recent months, Fiji has witnessed similar tragic accidents that have raised alarms about road safety in the region. The national road death toll currently stands at 55, a slight decrease from 74 fatalities recorded during the same period last year, suggesting that increased public awareness and road safety initiatives might be having a positive impact. However, instances like this emphasize the urgent need for continued vigilance and improvement in safety measures, especially in areas frequented by children.

Community leaders and law enforcement officials are urging both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution on roadways. Engaging in discussions about road safety and advocating for enhanced measures to protect the most vulnerable users may help prevent such tragic accidents in the future.

The loss of young life is always a tremendous sorrow, but there remains hope that increased awareness and a collective effort toward safer practices can foster a more secure environment for all road users.
