A man lost his life today in Rakiraki after his vehicle veered off the road at Ellington around 11 a.m. The elderly driver was traveling from Rakiraki town to his home in Barotu when the tragic accident occurred. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident and mentioned that a postmortem examination will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
This incident adds to the concerning rise in road fatalities, with another elderly man dying over the weekend in an accident in Lautoka. This brings the current national road death toll to 9, significantly lower than the 17 fatalities reported for the same period last year.
Historically, road safety has been a pressing issue, with authorities emphasizing the need for safer driving practices. Despite the recent tragic incidents, efforts from law enforcement and traffic departments have led to a decrease in fatalities compared to previous years. Authorities continue to investigate these incidents, aiming to improve road safety measures and minimize accidents.
Despite the somber nature of these events, there is hope that ongoing investigations and increased awareness around road safety can contribute to further reductions in the number of road deaths in the future.
