Tragic Road Incident Highlights Urgent Need for Safety Reforms

A man in his 60s tragically lost his life after being struck by a bus while attempting to cross Yasiyasi Road near the Valelevu roundabout in Nasinu last night. The bus was driven by a man in his 50s. Emergency services transported the victim to the Valelevu Health Centre where there was unfortunately no success in resuscitation efforts.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, reported a concerning rise in serious road accidents resulting in both injury and fatalities in recent days. So far this year, Fiji has recorded eight road fatalities, a figure that, while lower than the 17 fatalities reported during the same period last year, still signifies ongoing concerns regarding road safety. The primary causes of these incidents include speeding, careless driving, pedestrian error, and improper overtaking.

The statistics reveal an alarming trend, urging both drivers and pedestrians to exercise greater caution and attentiveness while navigating the roads. Divuana highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in adopting safer road practices, emphasizing that road safety is a shared obligation.

In a positive light, the reduction in road fatalities compared to last year suggests that increased awareness and educational campaigns regarding road safety may be yielding some positive results. Continued efforts towards improving safety on the roads, along with community cooperation, could further help in minimizing such tragic occurrences in the future.
