Tragic Road Death Sparks Urgent Call for Safety on Fiji’s Roads

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users to exercise increased caution following a recent tragic incident in Korolevu that resulted in a second road death this week. The victim, a man, lost his life in an accident on Queens Road, raising ongoing concerns about road safety.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and highlighted that the passenger involved is currently receiving medical treatment. He emphasized that while an investigation is underway, speeding remains the predominant cause of road accidents and fatalities in the country.

Despite ongoing public awareness campaigns and repeated warnings, many drivers continue to neglect key safety regulations and advisories. Rokosawa noted that the current road death toll stands at four, which, while significantly lower than the 14 fatalities recorded at the same time last year, still reflects an urgent need for vigilance on the roads.

Previously reported incidents, such as the recent fatal accident in Lautoka, have further underscored the dangers of speeding. The LTA and the Fiji Police have issued over 182,615 traffic infringement notices this year, with the majority attributed to speeding and other unsafe driving behaviors. These statistics highlight the persistent challenges to road safety in Fiji, despite a notable decline in fatalities overall.

As the festive season approaches, Rokosawa calls for continued awareness and responsibility among drivers. Improvements in road safety require collective efforts from all community members, and the LTA remains committed to conducting collaborative enforcement initiatives with the Fiji Police to promote safer driving practices.

The LTA encourages all drivers to adhere to speed limits, minimize distractions, and ensure that all passengers are secured in their vehicles. This tragic period serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of road safety and the importance of compliance with traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.

These steps are essential not just for reducing the number of accidents, but also for fostering a safer environment for all road users in Fiji. By working together, authorities and the public can make a difference in enhancing road safety for everyone.
