Police have confirmed that two lives were tragically lost in a recent accident in the Western Division. The incidents, which occurred within a 48-hour period, involve a father and son identified as Rup Chand, 77, and his son Rakesh Chand, 52. The first accident involved Rakesh, who allegedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and into a creek. Unfortunately, he did not survive.
The incident resulted in injuries to three other passengers who were traveling in the vehicle with Rakesh; they are currently admitted at Lautoka Aspen Hospital in stable condition. Rup Chand, the elder victim, died as a result of the accident.
This situation underscores the concern surrounding road safety, particularly in light of the current national road death toll, which has reached 35; this reflects an increase compared to 32 for the same period last year. Authorities, including the Fiji Police, are urging drivers to practice safe driving habits, emphasizing that one wrong decision could lead to devastating consequences.
In related news, several fatal accidents have been reported in the region recently, prompting ongoing investigations and increased efforts towards enhancing road safety measures. For instance, a previous incident involved two fatalities in separate accidents, with police focusing on drivers’ adherence to road regulations and safety practices.
The community is reminded of the importance of vigilant driving to prevent such tragedies and to support initiatives aimed at reducing road fatalities. Together, there is hope that continued awareness and preventive measures will contribute to safer roads in the future.
