The Fiji Police Force is once again cautioning the public about the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, following a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of two men in a road accident in Waitolu, Naitasiri. The accident occurred Wednesday afternoon when the two individuals, aged 21 and 45, were reportedly intoxicated and became involved in a physical altercation that spilled onto the main road, where they were struck by a bus driven by a 30-year-old man.

The younger victim was pronounced dead at Vunidawa Hospital, while the older man succumbed to his injuries at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital the following morning. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, who oversees traffic operations, highlighted that the accident could have been avoided had alcohol not impaired the victims’ judgment.

Divuana emphasized that alcohol poses a significant risk to all road users including drivers, passengers, riders, and pedestrians. He urged individuals to act responsibly and be aware of the repercussions of their actions. “Two families are now grieving the loss of their loved ones so close to Christmas,” he noted, reinforcing the need for ongoing public awareness campaigns regarding the dangers of alcohol, which can slow reaction times and impair decision-making abilities.

On a positive note, the national road death toll stands at 58 this year, a notable decrease from 74 fatalities at the same time last year. This statistic suggests that while incidents like this remain tragic, overall road safety efforts are showing progress and reinforcing the importance of responsible behavior.

This sad event serves as a reminder to prioritize safety and make informed choices, especially during the holiday season. By understanding the risks associated with alcohol consumption, community members can help foster a safer environment for everyone.

In summary, the Fiji Police continue to advocate for responsible drinking and awareness of its effects, particularly in relation to road safety, as two families mourn their loss during this festive time.
