The Fiji Police Force has issued a renewed warning regarding the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to severe injury or even death. This caution comes after a tragic incident in Waitolu, Naitasiri, where two men lost their lives in a road accident on Wednesday afternoon.

The victims, aged 21 and 45, were reportedly intoxicated when they became involved in a physical altercation that spilled onto the main road. Unfortunately, they were struck by a bus driven by a 30-year-old man. The younger man was pronounced dead upon arrival at Vunidawa Hospital, while the older victim succumbed to his injuries the following morning at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, emphasized that the accident could have been prevented if the victims’ judgment had not been impaired by alcohol. He reiterated the significant dangers of overindulging, describing it as a serious threat to all road users, including drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.

SSP Divuana urged the public to act responsibly, especially as the holiday season approaches. “We cannot stress enough the importance of being responsible and acknowledging the consequences of your actions,” he stated. The loss of these two lives so close to Christmas is particularly painful for their families.

He also highlighted that this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the effects of alcohol on decision-making and reaction times. Authorities will continue to advocate for responsible behavior, but ultimately, it is crucial for individuals to heed these warnings seriously.

Currently, the national road death toll stands at 58, a slight decrease from 74 reported during the same period last year.

This article underscores the importance of promoting responsible drinking habits, especially as the festive season approaches when celebrations can lead to increased alcohol consumption. The focus on safety can foster a sense of community, where everyone looks out for one another, encouraging more people to make safer choices during gatherings.
