A man in his 60s from Rakiraki has sadly become the latest casualty in Fiji’s alarming trend of road fatalities. The incident took place yesterday afternoon on Kings Road near Ellington when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road.
The man, who was traveling with two passengers, was rushed to Rakiraki Hospital. Unfortunately, despite the medical team’s efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The two passengers sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
Authorities have announced that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death, and investigations into the accident are underway.
This tragedy echoes recent events in Rakiraki, where another vehicle accident claimed the life of a 27-year-old man, emphasizing the need for heightened road safety awareness. The current road death toll stands at 38, showing a decrease from 62 fatalities during this period last year, indicating that continued efforts in road safety campaigns may be taking effect, although the recent incidents highlight the ongoing dangers faced by drivers and passengers alike.
The community is urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the roads as these unfortunate incidents reflect the critical importance of adhering to traffic regulations and practicing safe driving behavior.
