A man in his 30s tragically lost his life in a road accident on Rewa Street last night. The victim was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by a man in his 50s when, according to police reports, the driver allegedly made a sudden U-turn that resulted in a collision with an oncoming vehicle.
Emergency services swiftly transported all involved— the victim, the driver, and another passenger—to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the driver and the second passenger are currently receiving treatment as investigations proceed.
This latest incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety, particularly given that it follows other recent fatalities on Fiji’s roads. Just earlier this year, another tragic accident claimed the life of a 27-year-old man near Rakiraki. Such incidents highlight the need for heightened awareness of traffic regulations to help prevent further road fatalities.
Despite the discouraging nature of these events, there is a silver lining worth noting: earlier reports indicate a gradual decline in road death tolls compared to prior years. This suggests that focused road safety initiatives may be making an impact. It is hoped that community education and adherence to safe driving practices will continue to improve the safety of all road users.
