The Fiji Police Force is once again emphasizing the dangers associated with excessive alcohol consumption, highlighting its potential to lead to severe injuries or fatalities. This warning comes in the wake of a tragic road incident in Waitolu, Naitasiri, where two men lost their lives on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the victims, aged 21 and 45, were allegedly intoxicated and became involved in a confrontation that spilled onto the main road, where they were struck by a bus driven by a 30-year-old man. The 21-year-old was pronounced dead at Vunidawa Hospital, while the 45-year-old succumbed to his injuries the following morning after being transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
SSP Divuana emphasized that the accident could have been avoided had the victims not been under the influence of alcohol, which impairs judgment and decision-making. He urged the public to practice responsibility, stating, “Overindulgence in alcohol poses serious risks to all road users, including drivers, passengers, riders, and pedestrians.”
He noted the heartbreak faced by two families during this festive season due to the loss of their loved ones and reiterated the importance of taking alcohol-related warnings seriously. “It is imperative to understand how alcohol can slow down your reaction time and impair your ability to make sound decisions regarding safety,” he said.
As the national road death toll currently stands at 58, an improvement from 74 in the same period last year, there is an ongoing effort from road safety stakeholders to promote safer behaviors on the road.
In summary, this incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of responsible alcohol consumption, especially during festive times when celebrations are common. The aim is to ensure that families can celebrate the holidays safely and without the shadow of tragedy.
