The Fiji Police Force is once again emphasizing the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, following a tragic road incident in Waitolu, Naitasiri, that resulted in the deaths of two men. The victims, aged 21 and 45, reportedly engaged in a conflict that led to their presence on a busy road, where they were struck by a bus driven by a 30-year-old man.
The younger victim was declared dead upon arrival at Vunidawa Hospital, while the older victim succumbed to his injuries the following day after being transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, stated that the accident may have been preventable had the victims’ judgment not been impaired by alcohol. He emphasized that alcohol poses a serious threat to all individuals on the road—whether they are drivers, passengers, riders, or pedestrians.
Divuana urged the public to act responsibly, especially as two families mourn their losses just before the holiday season. He reiterated the importance of making safe choices regarding alcohol consumption, as it significantly affects reaction times and decision-making related to road safety. Despite ongoing efforts from road safety stakeholders to raise awareness about these dangers, Divuana highlighted that the responsibility ultimately lies with individuals to heed such warnings.
Currently, the national road death toll has reached 58, a decrease from 74 during the same period last year.
