A 12-year-old boy who was involved in a road accident in Navua last month has died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that the incident occurred on the evening of September 28, 2024, when the child was walking along the road near the Yarawa Settlement in Serua. He was reportedly struck by a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man, who allegedly lost control of the car.
The child sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, where he ultimately passed away. Another victim, a seven-year-old child, also suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized.
SSP Divuana noted that the ongoing investigation highlights the dangers of speeding. He said, “Speeding kills, if not the driver or their passengers, other road users. Some drivers blatantly disregard speed limits, and their actions are both dangerous and selfish.”
Currently, the road death toll stands at 44, a significant decrease from 63 deaths during the same period last year.
