Two individuals tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Lautoka yesterday. According to police reports, the victims include the 52-year-old driver and his 77-year-old passenger, both hailing from Vitogo, Lautoka.

The accident occurred when the driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle at Vatamai Junction. During this maneuver, he collided with another vehicle, subsequently losing control and veering off the road. His vehicle then plunged into a creek just before the Lovu Bridge. Emergency services rushed the driver and his three passengers to Lautoka Hospital, where the driver and one passenger were sadly pronounced dead upon arrival. The other two passengers are currently under observation at the hospital for their injuries.

This incident echoes a previous tragic event in Lautoka where a man in his 60s died after losing control of his vehicle on Paipai Road. Like this recent incident, that accident also raised concerns about road safety. It has been noted that this year has seen a decrease in road fatalities, with nine reported so far compared to 17 in the previous year, indicating that ongoing safety measures and public awareness campaigns may be making a positive impact.

While these recent events reflect the dangers on the road, the downward trend in fatalities offers a glimmer of hope. It serves as a crucial reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to safety measures in order to protect lives and prevent further tragedies on our roads.
