In light of a tragic incident involving a five-year-old girl from Naituvatuvatu Village, Wainibuka, Tailevu, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO), Livai Driu, is urging parents to be more responsible and vigilant with their children during the school break.

The young girl was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt after they had been gathering edible lady fern (Ota). Her body was recovered the following morning after a search was initiated by local police following a report from the village headman. The initial search was halted due to darkness and unfavorable weather conditions but resumed the next day.

ACPO Driu emphasized the need for parents to exercise extra caution with their children during this holiday period. He recommended that parents spend more quality time with their kids and be mindful of their activities, suggesting avoidance of large gatherings and festivities that could put children at risk.

This unfortunate event reinforces the importance of parental vigilance and community safety. By taking greater care and being proactive, families can work together to prevent such tragedies in the future. It is a reminder that moments of joy can easily lead to peril without proper attention, especially in naturally challenging environments.

Parents are encouraged to engage in meaningful activities with their children during this break, ensuring both safety and enjoyment. By fostering stronger connections, families have an opportunity to create positive memories while being vigilant.
