A tragic incident unfolded in Naituvatuvavatu Village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River. The unfortunate event occurred yesterday as the young girl, her 32-year-old aunt, and seven other children were making their way back after foraging for edible lady ferns.

The Turaga ni Koro of Naituvatuvavatu Village reported the incident to authorities. In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu confirmed that a team of three police officers was dispatched to aid in the search efforts. Unfortunately, the search was halted due to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions, but it will resume today.

ACPO Driu emphasized the crucial need for increased parental supervision, especially during the school holiday period. He urged parents to be more vigilant and to prioritize spending time with their children, rather than attending social gatherings.

This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the responsibilities that come with parenting, particularly in ensuring the safety of children during times of play and exploration. There is hope that the ongoing search will yield positive news, and this incident can prompt a greater awareness of child safety among families in the community.
