The Fiji Police Force is once again highlighting the serious risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, particularly in relation to road safety. This warning comes in the wake of a tragic road accident that resulted in the deaths of two men in Waitolu, Naitasiri, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the victims, aged 21 and 45, were reportedly intoxicated and became involved in a confrontation that spilled onto the main road. They were subsequently struck by a bus driven by a 30-year-old operator. The younger victim was declared dead upon arrival at Vunidawa Hospital, while the 45-year-old succumbed to his injuries the following morning at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

SSP Divuana emphasized that this accident could have been avoided had the victims not been impaired by alcohol. He stated that excessive drinking poses a significant danger to all road users, including drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.

“We urge everyone to act responsibly,” SSP Divuana stressed, urging the public to acknowledge the potential consequences of their actions. “Two families are now grieving the loss of their loved ones so close to Christmas. We have consistently warned about the dangers of overindulgence, which affects your reaction time and decision-making abilities related to safety.”

The police urge all members of the community to take this message to heart, particularly as they approach the holiday season. Notably, the current road death toll stands at 58, a decrease from 74 deaths during the same period last year, highlighting the importance of ongoing awareness and prevention efforts.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety, especially during festive times when alcohol consumption may increase. By promoting responsible behavior, the community can work together to prevent such tragedies in the future.
