A man has been taken into police custody after allowing his 16-year-old nephew to drive his vehicle, which resulted in a tragic accident in Labasa on December 4. This was confirmed by Supritendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, the acting Divisional Police Commander for the North.

The victim, Shalvin Lal, a resident of Tuatua, Labasa, left his guardian’s home shortly after midnight to pick up his uncle when the incident occurred shortly after 1 am at Naduna. According to reports, the nephew lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and struck a culvert, leading to Shalvin’s unfortunate death from the crash.

Superintendent Soqosoqo explained that the man who permitted the driving has been brought in for questioning at the Labasa Police Station. Once the investigation file is complete, it will be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further action. The investigation will also look into the fact that the deceased was driving unlawfully without a valid driver’s license.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety and the responsibilities that come with granting permission to drive. It highlights the necessity for parents and guardians to be vigilant when considering who should operate a vehicle, especially minors.

In light of this tragedy, it is hoped that the community can come together to promote safer driving practices and ensure that such accidents are prevented in the future.
