A tragic incident has claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy in Fiji, marking a somber addition to the country’s road fatalities. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the young driver was traveling along Korotari Road in Labasa shortly after 1 a.m. when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle. The car veered off the road and collided with a culvert.
Emergency services rushed him to the Labasa Hospital where he received treatment, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. SSP Divuana noted that the young man was driving without a valid driver’s license, an important detail that will be examined further as part of the ongoing investigation.
As it stands, the road death toll in Fiji has reached 57 this year, showing a decrease compared to 74 fatalities during the same period last year.
This incident underscores the critical importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations, particularly for young drivers. It serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to educate their children about the responsibilities and risks associated with driving, as well as the need for proper licensing.
Despite the tragedy, there is hope that increased awareness and education about road safety will help reduce future incidents and save lives.
