The tragic loss of 11-year-old Roger Qoro has left his family and community devastated. Roger, known for his bright future and aspirations of becoming an aircraft engineer and representing his country in rugby, died on New Year’s Day after being thrown from the back of a moving vehicle during a church picnic.
The incident occurred while the youth were travelling along Natadola. As the vehicle hit a pothole, Roger was ejected from the truck, landing on the tar-sealed road. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. His father, Roger Qoro Sr., expressed the family’s deep sorrow, stating the loss marks a painful beginning to the year, not just for them but for those who knew Roger and were touched by his spirit.
Roger was not only an exceptional student, consistently ranking in the top two of his class through the years, but he was also a talented athlete. He excelled in various sports, including sprinting, and had aspirations of competing internationally. His passion and determination were evident, as he dreamt of having medals displayed proudly in the family home, a testament to his hard work and dedication.
The incident has prompted police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and examine road safety practices to prevent such tragic events in the future. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, lamented the ongoing issue of road safety, stressing the need for drivers to be more vigilant and responsible.

Roger was a beloved child, described affectionately as the “Nadi Golden Boy” for his potential and popularity among peers.
