A family is entering the New Year in profound sorrow following the heartbreaking loss of 10-year-old Kiliaoni Lili Qalotaki. His body was discovered yesterday in the Navua River after he was swept away by strong currents while swimming with friends in the Raiwaqa River on December 28.

Police have confirmed that the remains found belonged to the young student, whose father, 45-year-old pastor Semi Qalotaki, detailed the tragic incident. The pastor recounted how Kiliaoni had been playing with friends when they encouraged him to swim with them, despite his initial reluctance.

“We planned to decorate the church for Sunday service while the children played. The rugby ball they were using got stuck on the roof, prompting them to help with the cleaning. Afterward, Kiliaoni headed home with his siblings, but his friends followed and persuaded him to join them for a swim. Just minutes later, they returned in distress, saying he had been taken by the current,” shared Mr. Qalotaki.

For three agonizing days, the family, local residents, police, and the Fiji Navy conducted extensive searches for Kiliaoni. Their efforts concluded with the discovery of the boy’s body yesterday morning. “This has been an incredibly difficult phase for us, but we are grateful and at peace knowing his body has been found and that he is with the Lord,” his father expressed.

Kiliaoni was remembered as a spirited child, known for his mischievous nature, supportive attitude towards the church, and leadership among peers. Mr. Qalotaki noted the family was supposed to celebrate the New Year in Suva, highlighting Kiliaoni’s excitement about firecrackers sent by relatives from overseas.

The family expressed their appreciation towards River Tubing and Jewel of Fiji, two tourist ventures in the area, for their support during the search effort. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, and a post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday.

In these difficult times, the resilience of this family, alongside the kindness of their community, serves as a reminder of the power of support and togetherness in the face of unimaginable grief.

This tragic story is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety, especially around waterways. The family’s strength in the midst of sorrow is commendable, reflecting a spirit of hope and faith during challenging times.
